KPS - THE HISTORY

Kirkcaldy Photographic Society was formed on 2nd November 1898 with a total of 110 members enrolling at the first meeting in rooms in Kirkcaldy High Street. The Society was one of the founder members of the Scottish Photographic Society in 1903.

From 1925 Kirkcaldy Photographic Society moved into clubrooms in the Museum and Gallery buildings.  The actual photographic rooms were built specifically for Kirkcaldy Photographic Society and kindly donated by the industrialist John Nairn (see image opposite) who was appointed Honorary President at that time.

Occupation of the club rooms continued until the 1980's when the building was closed for refurbishment and the Society had to move out. Since the 1980's the Society has occupied numerous premises. Today we rent rooms in Hayfield Community Centre.

Photographic processes have witnessed many innovations and changes since the Society's inauguration in 1898. From glass plate negatives, available in the early 1900's, to the innovation of digital photography today Kirkcaldy Photographic Society members have embraced change and continue to encourage new members to improve their photographic skills.

We now have in the region of 45 members, several of whom have achieved success in national competitions.  We have a long and successful history and will continue to achieve success in the future.
